5 Fast, Formative Assessments

Are you looking for fast formative assessments for math or formative assessments for reading to drive your instruction?  How can you tell if your students are "getting it"?  Formative assessments are done during learning.  They are meant to help a teacher know whether the students are understanding the material that is being taught.  I use the following to help me:

1.  KAHOOT - This is a fun way to build short quizzes to see what your students are understanding.  My students love this platform.  You can build your own quizzes or use the premade ones.  (If you use the premade ones, I would make sure to go through it and check it.  I have found a few that have mistakes:))  The students can play from a computer, iPad, tablet, or phone.  They can also play individually or as a team.  You can even add videos if you would like.  I like to add America's Funniest Videos that play while the students are signing in.

2.  Edpuzzle - This is a great tool if you are showing your class a video.  This tool allows you to embed questions throughout the video.  The students must answer the questions before going on to the next segment.

3.  Backchannel - Backchannel chat is a digital conversation.  It can be used to enhance discussions, as an exit ticket, or motivate those shy students to participate in discussion.  I was one of those students that would have loved a tool like this.  I was shy, but I had a lot to offer in the classroom.  There are a few platforms that you can use for this:

Padlet - a digital bulletin board that you can post pictures, text, or video. This is a great formative assessment for reading.  It is my favorite!!!

TodaysMeet - a teacher can set up a private chat room. Students can ask questions, respond to questions, etc.

Chatzy - a free virtual chat room. Set up a room and invite students to join. You can customize the look of your room by changing the "skin" and font.

4.  Socrative - quizzes or exit tickets that students can take.  Students can work separately or in a team.  Questions can be multiple choice, short answer, or true/false.

5. Plickers - These can be used if you don't have 1 to 1 devices available.  You must get the plicker app on your smart phone.  You make a page for each student and they each get a card specific to them.  Once you ask a question, the students hold their card in the direction of their answer.  You point your phone camera (in app) toward the students.  The app reads the student answers and tells you which students were correct.
