This year I am really going to focus on word problems. This is something that my students really struggle with. We will work on how to read carefully and pick out the important information and look for key words to help them know what operation to use. In the math journals, I have them glue the four operation signs down. One on each page. Then I have them glue down key words that go with each sign. You could also do this as a whole class activity. I also have a center with word problem task cards. This is available for each student to work on when they get done with an assignment. These cover 4th grade standards, but could be used for other grades. You can find the task cards here:
