Today, I introduced fractions to my students. I decided to use play-doh for some modeling. I was unsure if my 6th graders would think that was too childish. I am so glad that I did it. They loved it!!!! We modeled first making the fraction using a circle, then using a rectangle. I had them divide it in equal parts using the denominator. We used a toothpick to make marks on the part of the model we wanted to show.
This is showing 3/8.
We also used the play-doh to make a number line and practiced placing fractions on a number line.
This one shows a mark at 3/4.
Great Day!
